The Early Modern “Medieval”Reconstructing Japanese Pasts

October 7 – 8, 2011
University of Michigan

The panelists will offer, in addition to their papers, mini source-reading workshops. Each participant introduces to the audience the most important primary source, either textual or visual, that was used to support an argument in his or her paper. All presenters will provide an appropriate English-language summary and translation of the source and lead the attendees in a close reading of the source, exploring topics such as authorship, intent, vocabulary, and the processes by which we extract meaning from the source. The combination of the paper and the workshop should allow the attendees to appreciate samples of historical sources that came to circulate in early modern times and to understand how such sources need to be interpreted critically from various perspectives.
